MCINTOSH PRESIDENT PRAISES 2ND CAREER STUDENT SUCCESS

(Dover, NH; November 13, 2007) McIntosh College President Dr. Michael Hoyle offered congratulations to a group of recent graduates who have begun a new business with the opening of Studio4 Photography in Alfred, Maine. The three students included Earl "Rusty" Adams, who entered McIntosh as a 50-year-old, second-career student. In addition to Adams, the other McIntosh students involved in Studio4 are Margaret Poole and Rhonda Burnell. Studio4 is a co-operative of local photographers who specialize in portraits, nature, and events.

Hoyle said, "I am sure Rusty, who had been working as a mechanic before medical issues ended his ability to work in that profession, didn’t plan to start anew." Hoyle added, "Sometimes it is unintended circumstances that lead to a second career, but increasingly it is an affirmative choice people are making. McIntosh has a significant population of these students in the school and many programs that work for those who make this choice."

"I was working as a professional maintenance mechanic and state-licensed boiler engineer," Adams said. "Then, in 2002, I had major medical issues and I could not do the mechanical work I’d done my whole life. When something like that occurs, you decide that you’d better do the things you wanted to do that you hadn’t done before. You decide you’d better change your life. So, I decided to go back to school for photography."

Hoyle stressed that, "In a changing economy, the concept of a second career is becoming part of the normal course of one’s career. Schools like McIntosh offer these students a means of implementing these changes and quickly getting to the next place in their employment."

McIntosh College faculty member Jay Reiter said, "I am honored to work with students like Rusty. While they offer a maturity that comes with life experience, they also need support and mentoring that is different than students in their 20s. McIntosh encourages the faculty to step up and act as mentors for our students, and the pay off comes with success stories like Rusty."

The business will be located in the town’s old jailhouse (8A Court Street, in Alfred, Maine).
